The Merelani Tanzanite mine in Tanzania is very primitive. The miners work 18 hour shifts in mines that oxygen is piped in through tubes. Water is scarce- as are all amenities. Tanzanite is a rare gem but hardly worth owning after seeing the conditions that the men face to mine it.
